In Python, the built-in chr() and ord() functions allow you to convert between Unicode code points and characters. Additionally, in string literals, characters can be represented by their hexadecimal Unicode code points using \x, \u, or \U.

Usually, you just do ord(character) to find the code point of a character. For completeness though, wide characters in the Unicode Supplementary Multilingual Plane are represented as surrogate pairs (i.e. two code units) in narrow Python builds, so in that case I often needed to do this small work-around: if len(char) != 2: return ord(char)

Finally, if at least one code point is in the range U+010000..U+10FFFF, then UCS-4 is used. In addition to this, CPython distinguishes the case when a string contains only ASCII characters. Such strings are encoded using UCS-1 but stored in a special way.

Python provides a function named ord(), which takes a character as input and returns its corresponding Unicode code point. This is the tool we’ll use to get the job done.
