The sheriff of Suffolk County is scheduled to appear for an arraignment on Thursday afternoon after federal authorities charged him with using his position to extort a cannabis company executive.

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins was charged with extortion involving the purchase of an equity interest in a Boston-based cannabis company by federal authorities last week.
