Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday urged California’s local governments to clear homeless encampments, escalating the state’s efforts to ban the growing number of makeshift camps on sidewalks and in parks that are the most visible signs of the crisis of people living on the streets.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called on cities to ban and remove homeless encampments from sidewalks, bike paths and other public property, ratcheting up the state’s effort to tackle the crisis.

The governor released a model ordinance that local governments can tailor and implement as part of efforts to address homelessness in California.
