Microsoft said Thursday that XML would be the default file format for three applications when it ships Office 12 late next year.

These “default” XML file formats are designed as an extension of the Word­pro­cess­ingML and SpreadsheetML schemas and will be interoperable with the binary formats of Office 2000 and later.
