Running Visual Studio Code in the browser the easy way (Image credit: Windows Central) Microsoft has now launched an official browser version of Visual Studio Code that can be found at vscode.dev.

Microsoft has taken Visual Studio Code to the browser with the new VS Code for the Web, a lightweight version of the super-popular code editor that runs fully online.

Backed by industry leaders GitLab, VMware and Sourcegraph, Gitpod created an open-source project to bring browser-based development to VS Code free from Microsoft's control.

Visual Studio Code is a free, lightweight but powerful source code editor that runs on your desktop and on the web and is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi OS.

The source code editor now allows the selection of a default browser and brings new features for pull requests. Support for TypeScript 5.6 is also included.

That has changed somewhat. Among other innovations, Visual Studio Code now has good support for editing, running, and debugging Java code through a set of Java-specific extensions.
