more info - i was able to get this running on an old NT4.0 box, so the driver works, but NT5.0 has the "Not enough memory was available for a UNICODE_STRING" problem.

This led to quite a few unicode errors in databases dating from before then - in particular, where there is only occasional use of special characters, it sometimes isn't spotted until ages afterwards.
