Excel's ascending and descending sort options are powerful tools, but they won't always sort values in a familiar and meaningful way. When this is the case, you might need a custom sort.

To sort the last names alphabetically in ascending order, choose "A to Z." Click on the "Add Level" button at the top of the Sort dialog box to add a third sorting criterion.

Click the "Sort Smallest to Largest" button to sort your numeric data in ascending order. The button is located within the "Sort & Filter" group on Excel's "Data" tab.
