The Ubuntu MATE image contains a 64MB boot partition (FAT16) and a 3.60GB root partition (ext4), so it will fit on a 4GB microSD card - but just barely, so don't get your hopes up.
Unfortunately even that is difficult, because the update process complains about not having enough space in the /boot partition, and there is no room to increase the size of that partition. Sigh.
