if i change it to onKeyDown, then onKeyDown works but onChange doesn't. Looks like when i move to debugging panel, the textbox loses focus and the second event does not fire (onChange or onKeyUp).

Event handling in Javascript is synchronous. When using await in a JS event handler the rest of the handler function is executed later, but the event continues in the meantime.
