GitHub Copilot has pushed AI-assisted programming well beyond code generation and code chat, with new capabilities continuing to arrive at a rapid pace.

The company described Gemini CLI GitHub Actions as a free, beta-stage AI teammate that lives within a GitHub repo, capable of acting as an autonomous agent and an on-demand collaborator.

Google released Jules, its asynchronous coding agent, at its most recent I/O developer conference in May. That same month, GitHub gave its Copilot coding assistant an agentic upgrade.
