With Office 2024, ActiveX controls in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio will be turned off by default, and users will not receive any warnings.

These are intended to give Office documents a richer experience when used with the backoffice server by enabling scripting. However some ActiveX controls can be configured to execute without a prompt.

For this exploit, an attacker crafts a malicious ActiveX control to be used by a Microsoft Office document that hosts the browser rendering engine.

It's been quiet for a while, but ActiveX is still around. Upcoming Microsoft Office versions will finally switch off support. At least almost.

However, any web-based documents should use the newer controls and not ActiveX. Internet Explorer will probably be retired in 2022, and currently, Edge doesn’t support ActiveX.
