One of File Explorer's largest limitations is the inability to remember tabs or open preselect pages. This simple script will help you fix that and open several File Explorer tabs upon launch.

To restore Tabs in File Explorer after Restart in Windows 11, enable the 'Restore previous folder windows at logon' setting in Folder Options.

You cannot select and move a tab or multiple tabs from one File Explorer window of Windows 11 to another. You can only drag a single tab out at a time and open it in a new window.

Another improvement to the Windows 11 22H2 File Explorer now available is the ability to open tabs. Click the + icon to open a new tab and then navigate to a new folder or drive, as shown in Figure D.

It introduced Sets in a Windows 10 preview build that let you open new tabs in almost any application. However, the feature was never shipped with Windows despite its promise.

Build 25290 also includes a hidden feature that lets you drag out a tab from the File Explorer to open it in a new window.

After disappearing from the preview builds, the tabbed interface in File Explorer in Windows 11 is back with several quality-of-life improvements. Still, the feature is not ready for prime time.

With it, you get a new “plus” button in the title bar of File Explorer. This lets you open separate tabs for key areas of Windows 11.
