You can make Excel always open old spreadsheets in Protected View. Enable or disable Protected View using in-built setting, Group Policy, Registry.

Press "Alt-F11" to launch Excel's Visual Basic editor. Double-click "VBAProject" in the Project window, and then double-click "Microsoft Excel Objects" to open a list of sheets in your workbook.

Excel can read these files, but won't open them automatically. Open Excel, click "File" and then "Open." Change the type selection to "All Files" and select your Works spreadsheet.
