Why Should I Move My OS Install from the HDD to SSD? Opting for a solid-state drive (SSD) over a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) for your operating system (OS) comes down to speed, plain and simple.
The first is a SATA SSD, which comes in a 2.5-inch form factor and connects to your motherboard with the same cables and ports as a SATA HDD. The second (and newer) is the M.2 SSD.
If you're upgrading from an HDD to an SSD, make the most of the extra speed it offers by setting the SSD as your boot drive.
