Version 7 of the SAS System includes three interface library engines, BMDP, OSIRIS and SPSS, that enable you to access external data directly from a SAS program. All these engines are read-only.

Starting with Version 16, SPSS offers a free plug-in that lets users run R code within SPSS having full access to the active SPSS Statistics data, and writing its output to the SPSS Statistics Viewer.
