Although WhatsApp is easier to use on your phone, you can easily set up the app on your Wear OS smartwatch for messaging on the go.

Nor can you push a button to open an app on your phone - a feature of Android Wear when paired with an Android phone. But by and large, it works well at pinging you with alerts.

The app is designed to take advantage of Android Wear 2.0 features, including the LTE connectivity allowing the watch to work independently of the phone.

The app update simply takes advantage of the inclusion of support for cellular connections in Android Wear 2.0.

Wear OS is used to power millions of smartwatch and wearables, including those made by Google and Samsung. It's primary competitor is Apple's WatchOS.
